A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) High Chief Mike Ozekhome has strongly opposed the tenure extension of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu announced on Thursday by the Presidency.

The Senior Advocate who was a guest on “Politics Today” – a Channels Television programme speaking few hours after the announcement of the tenure extension said it was constitutionally wrong for the IGP to continue in office after his retirement from the Police Force was effective on 1st February, 2021 by effusion of time.

He contended that it was known before now that Adamu was due to retire from the Police Force on 1st February, 2021 and the Muhammadu Buhari administration was well aware of this and ought to have sought for successor to appropriately take over on that date.

High Chief Ozekhome has therefore advised President Buhari to withdraw the tenure extension of IGP Adamu as he has acted unconstitutionally. He explained that the only organ that could effect such tenure elongation in the present circumstance is the National Assembly.
